Product safety and social responsibility -
HEUNEC is ICTI- and BSCi- certified
HEUNEC is one of the pioneers, whose production plants in China were certified according to the „Code of Conduct“. These certifications are renewed annually. All products are manufactured in ICTI- or BSCI-certified production plants in Asia and are of a very high quality.
What does „Code of Conduct“ mean and why are those certifications used?
There are many things one can notice at first sight:
Are there emergency exits and fire distinguishers?
Is there child labour? How are the sanitary facilites and how long do the staff have to work every day?
The only way, however, to get to know if staff is paid properly or if they are well informed about their rights etc, is to conduct surveys among the employees. This is the task of independent testing institutes such as SGS, TÜV or LGA.
These surveys are conducted on behalf of ICTI and BSCI and are renewed annually. The abbreviation ICTI meanst International Council of Toy Industries, which is based in Hong Kong. The agreements of the ICTI regulate the adherence of social standards, conditions of employment, job security and environment protection. Environment protection also means using non-poisonous colours.
It is also supporting the prohibition of child labour
– and the idea that all rules of conduct are made available to the employees in their language orally and in writing.
The code of conduct of the BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative based in Brussels) is based on the Conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the UN Charta of the human rights, the UN conventions of Children's rights, as well as the abolishment of any kind of discrimination against women.
The test and the sequential tests are very complex.
Long questionnaires, in which every single detail is taken into consideration, are also filled out by the staff. It includes questions about payment and overtime, if they are faced with pressure or if there is any kind of punishment for mistakes resulting from sickness or during work.
Only those firms and companies, where ther questionnaires show no signs of anomalies and which fully comply with the rules of the ICTI and BSCI will get the certificate.
HEUNEC only cooperates with partner firms in China, which have this certificate..

After joy came the sorrow...
Mixed feelings at the zoo in Nuremberg.
Two weeks before the birthday of ice bear baby Flocke it's mother Vera gave birth to two ice bear babies. Sadly the joy was to last only for a short time.
Three days before Flocke's first birthday the first ice bear baby died.
As this was not enough: Only two days later Flocke's other sibling died.
Vera had taken care of her newborns with love and care. Why the babies died has not yet been identified.

HEUNEC nominated for the LIMA-Award 2008!!
To have your own „Eisbär Flocke“, „WE LOVE-Bear“ or „Tabaluga“ at home must be pretty normal for you. But did you know that you cannot produce those toys like that? First of all you have to apply for a permission to their „owners“ for example the television. Whoever has the best ideas for the design of the toys will get the permission, which we call „Lizenz“ (licence).
This year HEUNEC got the licence for ice bear Flocke. Since Flocke was well received by many of you, HEUNEC was nominated for the „LIMA-Award“, which will be awarded on 4 November in Cologne.
LIMA is an organisation, which awards the best licences with a prize every year. This prize can be compared to the „Oscar“, which is awarded to the best movie stars every year. Are you crossing your fingers for us?
Who is HEUNEC?
HEUNEC is a producer of toys, based in Upper Franconia. The name HEUNEC is combined from the name Hugo Heubach, who established the company in Sonneberg in 1891, and the old licence number of Neustadt bei Coburg (NEC), where the original head office was moved to in 1951. Today HEUNEC is the second largest manufacturer in Germany with an annually production of 5 – 6 million stuffed animals.
For the production of the toys they only use hand picked materials from well-known producers. The filling material consists of high quality polyester fibre, the useddyestuffs are not poisonous and the plush material can be washed at 30 degrees.
All articles are tested on a regular basis. The high quality of standard is confirmed by numerous independent testing institutes, which test the products obeying the strict European safety standard DIN EN 71. Only after this test is sucessfully passed, the stuffed animals will get the CE-sign.
